How To Film And Produce A Podcast

Five Key Questions to Ask When Making The Podcast

The earlier in the research process, the better you consider using a podcast for reporting. It's easy to create engaging podcasts if you adjust your methods from the beginning.

Is this research suitable for a podcast? (i.e. Am I speaking directly to the participants?)
In-depth interviews, whether face-to-face or remote, are suitable for this format . Because participants can often communicate things very clearly and have their own take on issues, it's best to keep them. Not just her own words, but her own voice as well. Stakeholders get a more complete understanding of participants than they get from notes or presentations from her slides.

Exploratory research (such as intercepts) and field research can also create powerful podcast material by capturing the participants and their surroundings, adding a real-time feel to the podcast. A good microphone or other recording means is essential here to record what the participants say, not the background noise.

Moments of investigation where you can capture clear audio are usually good opportunities to use podcasts as a sharing format. For example, focus groups (where participants speak individually) can be a great opportunity to get multiple people's perspectives on a topic.

Do you have enough bandwidth to prepare and record your podcast?
Reporting using this method takes a little longer than preparing a presentation, but not necessarily as much work as you might expect. We used Audacity to stitch clips into a podcast, but iMovie and other programs work well too. I gathered strong themes from the work, prepared the script, recorded my parts, and finally mixed the whole thing together. From start to finish, the process took around a couple of hours.

How Will I Capture Clear Audio?
You don't need lots of experience to get good audio clips for podcasts. You don't even need expensive equipment. Keeping this in mind you should think of:

  • Using good sound equipment. I.e. use a microphone if possible and use a computer to record the sound, if you don't have access to a microphone use the voice memos app on your phone.

  • Try and minimize interruptions and external noise during the interview

  • Speak clearly when asking questions and make sure to test the audio before the interview.

How do you record a podcast?

Recording a podcast episode requires very little preparation.

  1. Write a podcast outline. If working with a host share the outline with them so you can work on it together.

  2. Market your podcast. Podcast marketing is a vital part of growing your audience and a lot of it comes through the podcast itself.

  3. The format should compliment the podcast and feel like its sustainable and won't die out soon.

  4. Make your episodes are as long as they need to be and no longer. Alot of the time podcasts have episodes the length of a short audiobook. Here are some of the most common episode durations.

  • less than 10 minutes (14%)

  • 10—20 minutes (15%)

  • 20—40 minutes (31%)

  • 40—60 minutes (22%)

  • Over 60 minutes (7%)
